- Procure with the end of life in mind — Record ownership, specification, warranty, identifiers and expected service life from day one.
- Deploy with controlled enrolment and ownership — Management platforms, accounts and firmware controls should be deliberate, documented and reversible.
- Keep the asset record alive while devices are in service — Good disposal starts years before disposal: accurate inventory, supported software and controlled access reduce end-of-life surprises.
- Plan refreshes before equipment becomes a problem — A controlled refresh gives time to assess reuse, repair, resale, redeployment and disposal routes instead of defaulting everything to waste.
- Offboard accounts, management and ownership before collection — Device-management and activation locks are ownership controls. They can survive a data wipe and block legitimate reuse.
- Match disposal controls and evidence to the actual risk — The right endpoint depends on the data, asset, sector, contract and evidence requirement — not on a single one-size-fits-all method.
